Amanda M. Fairbanks is an award-winning journalist and author of The Lost Boys of Montauk: The True Story of the Wind Blown, Four Men Who Vanished at Sea, and the Survivors They Left Behind. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the Atlantic, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Columbia Journalism Review, Air Mail, and the East Hampton Star. A graduate of Smith College and a former Teach for America Corps member, she has two master’s degrees from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. She is currently in the beginning stages of researching and writing her second nonfiction book about Lyme disease.
Her latest essay written for Oprah Daily is titled How to Save Your Life (While Fighting Health Insurance Conglomerates) and was a special guest on the LYME TIME PODCAST to discuss her personal dealings with United Health Care during her onset and struggle with Lyme disease. We discuss the six lessons she learned so far during her journey as well as some tips for all warriors as they try to navigate the insurance claim industry with Lyme disease.
